Case Study
19 Cornwall Street, Birmingham
A transformative net zero carbon retrofit in the heart of the city’s business district
Architect: Associated Architects
Main Contractor: Willmott Dixon Interiors
Smart, Sustainable, and Striking
Situated in Birmingham’s prestigious Colmore Business District, 19 Cornwall Street has undergone a complete transformation into a 139,000 sq ft, smart-enabled, net zero carbon in operation office building. This back-to-frame redevelopment delivers over 130,000 sq ft of high-quality Grade A office space across seven floors, finished to the highest CAT A specification. Designed by Associated Architects and delivered by Willmott Dixon, the building sets a new benchmark for sustainable commercial refurbishment in the UK.
A Dramatic Welcome Space
At the heart of the redevelopment is the impressive 5,500 sq ft, 32-metre-high reception atrium. More than just an entrance, this striking space also functions as an event venue. Our Lusso 25 Edge system was used extensively here to create a clean, transparent finish that enhances the scale and brightness of the atrium. This same system continues across the upper floors, where it defines corridor spaces while maintaining open-plan floorplates and clear lines of sight.
Certified Acoustic Performance Where It Counts
On the ground floor, Lusso 305dB, a certified triple-glazed acoustic system, was installed to enclose a dedicated exercise zone. Designed to achieve up to Rw 60dB, Lusso 305dB provides Lusso’s highest level of sound insulation, delivering both performance and precision where acoustic control was essential.
Other ground floor areas also feature carefully specified systems: Lusso 25 was used to define a corridor, while Lusso 105 and Silenzio double door sets were installed to create a high-performance, acoustically treated rear space.
Performance-Driven, Future-Ready Design
19 Cornwall Street offers flexible floorplates of approximately 20,000 sq ft, enhanced occupier amenities and advanced smart-building technologies. Acoustic, environmental, and aesthetic performance were all key considerations. Lusso’s glazing systems contributed to the building’s EPC A rating, while supporting its transformation into a workspace designed around flexibility, wellbeing and sustainability.
