Tarka Leisure Centre, North Devon
A next-generation public leisure facility delivering performance, safety, and community impact
Architect: Watson Batty
Main Contractor: Speller Metcalfe
A Landmark for Health and Wellbeing in North Devon
Tarka Leisure Centre is a £14 million flagship development, redefining community leisure in the South West. Designed by Watson Batty Architects and delivered by Speller Metcalfe, the project brings together state-of-the-art sporting amenities, innovative design, and inclusive access. From the region’s first endless indoor ski slope to a dynamic aquatic centre, Tarka sets a new benchmark for multifunctional public leisure environments.
Balancing Safety, Transparency & Performance
One of the core design challenges was to maintain open sightlines and natural light while meeting demanding fire and acoustic standards. Lusso supported this vision by supplying a comprehensive range of fire-rated glazed partitioning systems. These included the Lusso 105FR E30, delivering minimal framework with Ei30 performance; the Lusso 125FR/T, a robust double-glazed fire-rated solution; and the Lusso 145FR/T EI60, which provides certified EI60 protection for critical areas. These systems ensured essential fire safety while upholding the clean, contemporary aesthetic of the centre.
Durability and Design with Impact
To complement the fire-rated glazing, Lusso Steel Frame Partitioning was incorporated across key areas of the centre. Offering durability and a sleek, contemporary finish, these systems enhance both the structural integrity and visual appeal of the internal layout—supporting a modern, user-friendly environment for the public.
A Facility Designed to Inspire
Now open to the public, Tarka Leisure Centre offers one of the most comprehensive fitness and wellbeing environments in the region. It features a full-size endless indoor ski slope, alongside a 25-metre, eight-lane swimming pool and a 20-metre learner pool, both with moveable floors for flexible use. A 120-station gym, four-court sports hall, dedicated spin room and three exercise studios support a wide variety of fitness activities. The facility also includes a soft play area, café, reception, outdoor civic plaza and a full-size 3G synthetic pitch.
In 2023, the project received national recognition, winning Commercial Pool Project of the Year at the UK Pool and Spa Awards. Tarka stands as a model for community-first, future-ready public infrastructure.
